Today is April 12. In this day Soviet cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin made the first manned space flight. Congratulations on World Aviation and Cosmonautics Day. Yuri Gagarin was born in 1934 in a small village in Gzhatsk District (later Gagarinsky District), Smolensk Oblast, USSR. There is a legend, how Yuri Gagarin chosen his future profession. During the Second World War, shortly before the liberation from the Nazis village where he lived, was a dogfight. One of the Red Army pilots sent his plane on the accumulation of German military equipment. Young Gagarin was impressed by this feat. After the war, Gagarin entered the aero-club (Saratov), then First Chkalov Air Force Pilot's School (Orenburg), where in 1957 he began pilot's career... Years of intensive training and April 12, 1961 a spaceship Vostok 1 took off from the Baikonur cosmodrome. There was the first manned space flight. ![]() ![]() Gagarin became an idol and an example of courage, strength and determination for all young men of the Soviet Union.
